Anticipation Guide

  1. The key to all emotional healing can be found in nature. Agree
  2. Nature is filled with harsh cruelties. Agree
  3. A person’s priorities should place family before work. Agree
  4. Enjoying life is more important than pursuing fame, glory, and knowledge. Agree
Pursing fame, glory, and knowledge may give you happiness but at the end of the day you will find a sense of emptiness. You will reach a point where you will wonder 'is that all there is?' By pursuing fame, glory, and knowledge what you are actually doing is trying to be happy. You believe that once you're famous you'll be happy, once you've got glory you'll be happy, once you learn something you'll be happy.

The truth is that happiness lies in the moment. It lies in the here and now, it lies in appreciating what you have and in counting your blessings. if you're always trying to get something more then you will never be happy. Happiness will always be around the next corner.
On the other hand if you make being happy now your objective in life then whether you get fame or whether you get glory or knowledge or whatever else you might want to achieve, you'll be happy. This is because you will be enjoying life as you live it now, this very minute, not tomorrow or yesterday.

You could say that if you have glory or fame or knowledge then you can enjoy life. But what if you don't? That's why it is important to look at life the other way round.
  1. Those born with social and financial advantages have a responsibility for those who are not. Agree
  2. Ignorance is bliss. Disagree
This proverb is based on the idea that what you don't know can't hurt you. However, this is not entirely true. Supposing you're in a boat traveling along a river leading towards the Niagara Falls but you don't know that the Niagara Falls are around the corner. You might
be blissfully enjoying the scenery, the boat ride, the moment and the next thing you know you're over the falls and you're dead. In which case ignorance might have ben bliss for that particular moment but you're lack of knowledge for something eventually killed you.

In the same way people may be happier living in their own secluded world, maybe lying to themselves about some truth or rather, not willing to face reality, yet that truth, if they don't face up to it, might eventually destroy them so it's not such a good idea to be ignorant.

If a person for example doesn't know about advances in science, in medicine, in technology etc he might be blissfuly happy in one way but this lack of knowledge could also mean he is missing out on things that could also be making him happier.

  1. The pursuit of knowledge is a volatile quest. Agree
  2. Someone’s ego (over-inflated sense of self-worth or superiority) will cause a tragic fall. Agree
  3. Children learn their behaviors by watching and mimicking adults. Agree
  4. Most people are basically cruel. Agree
  5. Society makes a person whatever he becomes. Disagree
  6. The “disenfranchised man,” who finds himself unable to live within society for whatever reason, is someone for whom we should feel sympathy or reverence. Disagree
  7. Rejection and mistreatment can manifest themselves in a person becoming rage-filled. Agree
  8. If a person or an animal is treated with cruelty, he will respond to others in the same way. Agree
  9. Those people we deem “monsters” in today’s society are merely misunderstood. Agree

Perspective Piece - To Kill a Mockingbird

I was sitting in the living room doing my embroidery when I heard Scout ask Atticus what rape is. She said she had asked Calpurnia who had told her to ask her father while on a trip to church with her. I put down my sewing to listen. I was surprised as to how Atticus had let these kids be brought up by Calpurnia. When Scout asked if she could go to Calpurnia’s house I just had to interrupt. I told her in no uncertain words that she certainly could not! I was not about to let my niece get too involved with Negros.

“I didn’t ask you!” the rude little girl replied.

Fortunately, Atticus took my side and made her apologize. He made it quite clear to her that she had to do whatever I told her to do for as long as I was in the house. But to my surprise he added that she also had to do whatever Calpurnia told her to do. That was a bit much in my view.

She apologized and stormed off into the bathroom. I took the opportunity to give Atticus a piece of my mind. I told him he had to get rid of Calpurnia.

“You’ve let things go on too long, Atticus, too long.”

“I don’t see any harm in letting her go out there. Cal’d look after her there as well as she does here.”

“Atticus, its all right to be soft-hearted, you’re an easy man, but you have a daughter to think of. A daughter who’s growing up.”

He claimed that’s who he was thinking about but how could he possibly be when he still insisted on keeping Calpurnia in the house.

“Don’t try to get around it. You’ve got to face it sooner or later and it might as well be tonight. We don’t need her now.”

Unfortunately, Atticus refused point blank. He said Calpurnia was part of their family and that I must accept things the way they are. What’s wrong with the man? Can’t he see that blacks and whites shouldn’t mix? Can’t he see that she could be a bad influence on the kids? This is what happens when your wife dies and you have no one and you don’t have a woman’s wisdom to guide you. He claimed that Calpurnia was like a mother to them but that’s ridiculous.

To kill a mockingbird: Anticipation Guide

All individuals standing trial in a court of law deserve to be defended

Agree. It is a basic human right for everyone to have a fair trial and to be able to know what he’s being accused of, to face his accuser, and to be judged by a fair jury. Everybody should have a say and be heard. In order to do so a person requires a legal defense. Lawyers, however, cost money and if you cannot afford it that should not mean that you will not be defended. In such a case the state should provide a lawyer free of charge. All humans should have the same rights no matter if they're rich or poor. If we live in a just society then everyone deserves the same treatment. Even people of another race who we may not agree with deserve to be heard. This is especially true for people who are uneducated and so cannot defend themselves. Furthermore this also applies to people who may be guilty since everybody is innocent until proven guilty. All human beings should at least be able to give their point of view because perhaps this could be a point of view that nobody else has heard.

Sometimes murder is a necessary evil

Disagree. Murder is never justified. God has given everybody a life. This is something that we should respect and nobody has the right to deprive anybody else of a life no matter how they chose to live it. Even if they choose to live a life of crime, putting someone to death doesn’t achieve anything. How does it teach them to be better human beings if they’re dead. We like to live in a society where we would like to feel safe. We wouldn’t like it if people went around killing each other so we have laws to control this. Sometimes people think that it is okay to kill another person if it's in self-defense, to protect a loved one or in a war. However, i don't think it is ever necessary. Surely there are other ways to solve problems rather than go to war. Even in the case of abortions. Killing a baby just so that it wont get your disease for example Isn't an answer. Even if it lives for just a brief amount of time, its better than no time at all as every moment of life is precious.

Gist Statement

The snow was falling gently on the streets of Moscow. Passers by walked along hurriedly wrapped up in their thick overcoats. Sasha Uhov watched the scene down below lost in thought and then turned his attention back to the doctor.
"Well thank you for telling me this new." He said ironically. "Its just what i needed."
The doctor looked away embarrassed.
"I know you're not really grateful. To be told that you've got cancer just after your wife Sashkin has left you, is not the best thing in the world."
Sasha stared at his gaudy shirt hanging on the back of the chair in front of him. The more he stared, the more the colours swirled and swiveled in his head until suddenly he exploded. He grabbed the closest thing to him, a beautiful candelabra on the doctors desk, and hurled it across the room.

Agree or Disagree

Feeling responsible for someone can be a burden.
Agree. It means that you have to think of the other person over and above yourself. For example if I'm responsible for looking after my cat i will have to make sure to feed him enough, clean his litter, and let him in and out the house. That would mean that i would not be able to go away for the weekend without making sure that he's looked after. We also have responsibilities to look after our family. Parents need to look after their children when they're young and children need to look after their parents when they're old. This can be difficult at times because it may not always be pleasant. Not only that, it means that you can not be free to do as you please.

It is more acceptable for women to love their female friends than it is for men to love their male friends.
Agree. Men are careful not to be labeled gay. They may be just as attached to their male friends ad women are to their female friends but will not express it the same way. They will be more inclined to pat their male friend violently on the back or give high fives than kiss and hug. The fear of being labeled gay holds them back.

There are times when euthanasia (mercy killing) can be justified.
Disagree. It's not up to us to decide when to die, but up to god. Killing is wrong under all circumstances. Even if you're in pain of have a terrible disease and want to die you never know what could happen. Maybe tomorrow if you stick it out they can find a cure for your pain and you could get better. If you had died you wouldn't have been able to enjoy many more years of life. Or maybe something wonderful will happen to you despite the pain and suffering.

Journey's End by J.R.R Tolkien

In western lands beneath the Sun
The flowers may rise in Spring,
The trees may bud, the waters run,
The merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night,
And swaying branches bear
The Elven-stars as jewels white
Amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey's end I lie
In darkness buried deep,
Beyond all towers strong and high,
Beyond all mountains steep,
Above all shadows rides the Sun
And Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
Nor bid the Stars farewell.

Agree or Disagree

Your mood is affected by the weather and your surroundings.
I agree. When it is cloudy and overcast and raining you can feel gloomy and down. You wont want to go outside but would prefer to stay inside, maybe light a fire and cuddle up. Not seeing the sun for many days in a row can make you depressed. Studies have shown that as a result you may develop a condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder. SAD occurs during the winter months especially in northern countries where the sun doesn't rise in the winter. In contrast when the sine is shining and the weather is good you feel happy. That's why many people like to live in countries where the weather is good. Colours can also affect your mood. For example red can make you mad or warn you of danger, while blue and green calms you. Yellow can be uplifting.

It is difficult to go without food for a whole day.
I disagree. Sometimes it is even considered good for you. People pay a lot of money to go to spas where they go on a special fasting diet to detox. More over, Muslims are expected to fast at certain time of year during a religious holiday called Ramadan that lasts for a month during which they don't eat at all during the day but stuff themselves at night. In addition models hardly eat at all in order to keep in perfect shape.

Going through a difficult time can make a person more mature or give them more confidence.
I agree. Sometimes people who have been through a lot in their lives are stronger and more resilient. They know they can overcome any problem in life because they have already done so. That gives them confidence. However there are cases when people don't manage to find the courage or the strength to get over their problems. In these cases they give in to depression and even go so far as to commit suicide. As Nietsche said "If it doesn't kill you, it can only make it stronger".

The love of money is the root of all evil.
I both agree and disagree. Basically what this means is that people will do anything for money even things that are morally wrong like murder and stealing. While it is true that many people might end up being tempted to go the wrong way for the sake of money, it is also true that many people don't. Also money is not the root of ALL evil. Some evil is committed for reasons other than money. For example jealousy can also give rise to murder.

Agree or Disagree

Everyone should read books.
Agree. Reading broadens your knowledge. It makes you aware of how the language works. Reading helps writing. And reading is fun because you're getting into a story and feeling the tension, excitement, and romance as if you're experiencing it yourself.

Literature can be dangerous.
Agree and disagree. It shouldn't be dangerous because it's always best to know the truth and the truth must be written. However, it can be dangerous if you're a government that wants to control its people by hiding things from them that if they knew might result in the government being overthrown.

Advances in technology is better for everyone.
Agree. Everyone benefits from some form of progress in technology. Although sometimes some of the advances might be too complicated for some people to understand. For example old people might not be able to use computers but they still benefit from advances in technology such as hearing aids.

Asian Religion

Muslims gather under the carved wood windows of Jama Masjid, Srinagar's largest mosque. They have come to prayer here since the 14th century. It was built by Sultan Sikandar in 1400 AD. The Jama Masjid has beautiful Indo-Saracenic architecture, courtyard, and 370 wooden pillars. Muslims gather every Friday to offer their prayers.

The room is large and has a very high ceiling. There are columns all around and it’s quite dark with shafts of light streaming in through some narrow high windows. From the angle of the beams it looks like it’s early morning. A couple of people are actually sitting in the sun beams and it looks as if they are being illuminated by God. A large carpet covers the floor to protect their knees and faces when they pray. It feels very peaceful and calm.

The Cholistan Desert

The Cholistan Desert is also known as the Rohi Desert. It is situated in the Punjab region of Pakistan and is the largest desert on the Indian continent.

The word Cholistan comes from ‘Chol’ which means desert in Turkish, but it could also come from 'Cholna' which means moving.

About 2.5 million people live in Cholistan who are nomads and travel around the desert, looking for water and herding and trading camels. The people live a very simple life and are very religious. They still keep their primitive customs and traditions and place great value in music and singing. They have a very strong culture with many romantic legends dating back to ancient times. The women and men both wear baggy, embroidered and colourful clothes. They have fabulous desert festivals where you can see camels dancing and wearing even more colourful clothes than the people. People still live in houses made of mud and straw just as they did 200 years ago.

The Cholistan people make interesting handicrafts such as wall hangings, bed covers, carpets and blankets with bright colours and beautiful patterns with geometric designs.

The desert expands over to Sindh and into India. The dry bed of the Hakra River runs through the area. When it dried up so did most of life there. Wildlife is scarce. Wild cat, jackal, wolf, squirrel, field rat, over 200 types of insects and as many as sixty varieties of snakes are found here.

The desert also has an Annual Jeep Rally, known as Annual Cholistan Jeep Rally.

It lies at an altitude of 400 ft. above sea level and covers an area of 23,500 sq. m. Temperatures range from 8º C in winter to 34º C in summer. There is very little rainfall in the area averaging about 3 - 5 inches annually. During the wet season the people built shallow reservoirs to catch the rainwater so that they could survive. Cholistan is changing because a canal system has been introduced.

Places of interest include the Derawar Fort where the tombs of the ex-rulers of Bahawalpur and their families are situated, and Shrines of Channan Pir.

Anticipation Guided Response

It's possible to believe in love at first sight
I disagree, If you believed in love at first sight then you would be judging a book by its cover. In other words that would mean that looks is the only thing that matters in love, whereas character, or having common interests is more important. Unless you're someone for whom looks is the most important thing only then can you fall in love at first sight.

Two strangers stuck on an island together could learn to love each other
I agree. They would get to know each other gradually through sharing experiences. They may end up having to work together to survive on that island and might eventually fall in love after getting to know each other. Spending time with someone will help you get to know each other and appreciate each other's good points because you will be able to get to know them deeply rather than superficially as you might if you were not having to spend every minute of the day together.

It is a good thing to sacrifice your happiness for other people
I agree. Someone might need something more than you do and it might not be such a big loss for you if you gave that thing up. Besides at the end of the day, helping another person will make you feel good yourself because it is always better to give than to receive.

Women in your society are free citizens
I agree. Women in our society have the same rights as men do. Women can do anything men can do. Maybe even better! However women should get equal pay for equal work. And because women are financially independent nowadays, they are free to do exactly as they please. Unfortunately many women in our society find themselves in a position where they have to do everything - they go to work and they look after the house and kids. Husbands don't do anything but they will all get the boot when my generation grows up because we wont stand for that.

The Outsiders Book or Movie

I think i would have to say that the book is better than the movie. In the book you are able to get into the character's head but in the movie it's mostly actions.
The book gives more details which helps us have clear view of what is going on whereas in the movie some things are harder to understand. One example is the relationship Ponyboy had with Sodapop. If i hadn't read the book i don't think i would have caught on how much ponyboy looks up to Sodapop. Also in the book Ponyboy looks up to Darry but that doesn't come across very strongly in the film. Some relationships in the book are completely left out in the film like the connection between Bob and Johnny and the difference that each of their parents treat them.
However because the movie is visual we understand certain things faster than we do in the book. For example we don't realize, in the book, that he's actually writing an English essay until we get to the end whereas in the movie we can actually see him writing it at the beginning of the story.
In the book the writer tells us a lot more about the background to their lives with the Socs and Greasers. The scene in the movie theater comes well into the book whereas in the movie it comes right at the beginning which shows how much is left out.

Killer Whales Podcast

Episode – Killer Whales
Date – January 25, 2009
"The radio piece was produced by former killer whale biologist turned public radio producer Ari Daniel Shapiro. Studying animals in nature isn't always about close encounters. For the field biologist, there is passion in the search for the quarry and the lengths to which people will go to find it."
I chose this podcast because I'm interested in animals and nature. Killer whales are creatures that i don't know anything about. I find it fascinating to imagine the world in which they live which is just miles and miles of nothing, only water where they have to find their prey. Also i learned that different type of killer whales eat different things. Also some make a lot of noise when hunting their prey while others make none at all.

Black Sheep News: Feline fashion

Fashion designers in Paris have decided to give true meaning to the word 'catwalk' by parading a series of designs especially for cats.

Cats were shown walking down the runway wearing delightful outfits for every occasion. Some were bright pink others were green and others were multicoloured matching their fur.

Some cats were wearing shirts with human motifs, a reversal of the Lacoste crocodile.

Unfortunately fur flew when some of the dogs in the audience jumped up onto the runway and attacked the cats.

"We thought it would be fun to do something for people's pets. But we're not going to do that again in a hurry" said designer John Kato.

The Outsiders Anticipation Guide Response

Sometimes violence can be justified.
Disagree. If somebody does something bad to you and you react with violence then that would only make the other person react to you with violence then your going to have to react back with violence and there is never any end. The only time it might be justified is in self defence, but even then it's better not to.

It's easier to make friends with someone very much like yourself, than someone who is very different than you.
Agree. Chances are if there's somebody like you, you will have the same interests and therefore you can do things together. If you speak the same language then you know what they're talking about. People who come from different classes might not get on well.

Petros from Dali

Petros from Dali was sitting under the Eiffel Tower. Things weren't looking good. He had no money, he was getting cold, and wet, and had nowhere to go. None of his paintings had sold, all the tourists were passing him by. He had come all the way from Cyprus for nothing. He was a failure. He was going to have to go home with nothing to show for himself.
He'd been in Paris for months now. But he hadn't managed to find a job and was forced to live in a cardboard box on the streets. He would walk up and down the Champs Elysees looking through the windows of Dior and Chanel and wishing his own fashion designs would be as famous as these.
As he was sitting there looking gloomy and feeling sorry for himself, a most elegant man suddenly appeared out of nowhere. He had shiny silver grey hair, tied back and a huge cape hanging off his shoulders. As he was about to sweep past he suddenly stopped and swirled around and stared at Petros's paintings.
"Oh magnifique!" He exclaimed. He introduced himself as Jacques and invited him to his studio. There he took his designs and gave them to the seamstresses and told them to make them up. These designs made a lot of money but Jacques only paid Petros a measly salary. When Petros realized what was going on, he confronted him.
"I took you out of the gutter and fave you a roof over your head and this is how you thank me? You're not getting anything."
Petros left the studio and rented a little attic somewhere. There he designed a collection under the name of Pierre Dali. He took it to the biggest department store. To his surprise they loved it and placed a big order. Before he knew it, all the most fashionable ladies in town wanted to buy his clothes. He couldn't make them fast enough and there was a waiting list a mile long. He even decided to branch out and make his own perfume called Dalicious. The perfume made him a millionaire and he lived happily ever after living the good life.
